Want to see my day in first grade?
My alarm is set for 4:38 am. I wake up and get to the gym by 5am. I workout and watch the news then shower and get dressed at the gym. I am outta there by 6:15! I stop at Starbucks and show up at school around 7am to write our morning message and get everything in order before the bell at 7:28!

I don’t have pictures of this, but we use Handwriting without Tears for the first 20 minutes and then the second 20 minutes, we do an interactive read aloud. An interactive read aloud is a planned, purposeful read aloud in which we use a mentor text to practice a certain skill and have stopping points to discuss!I actually spent the last year or so planning 64 different read aloud lessons for some of my favorite books. I aligned them with the specific skills I wanted to teach and thought of higher order thinking questions to ask throughout. If you want to try a FREE one for Officer Buckle and Gloria download the preview [HERE]. You will be able to print it right out!

Love it! Thanks for sharing your day. I teach 1st and sometimes feel like I never have time to do it all.

Your schedule is my ideal day! I am so jealous that you have the extended day so you can fit everything in. I have been trying to transition to a more reading workshop approach and your post is so informative and helpful. Unfortunately my district still uses a basal reading series but I'm going to try and incorporate the resources into a reading workshop. Thank you for your ideas! Have a great day!

I'm curious about your guided reading groups. How many groups do you meet with each day and for how long? 🙂 Becky
Hi Becky! I always pull 2 a day and they are both from anywhere between 10-20 minutes long!
I would love this! We only have about 3 and half hours to get everything in and that includes 30 minutes of leveled intervention. I feel like we never have enough time to fit everything in.
Thank you so much for linking up! I love how organized your day is. It would be wonderful to be in your class. Great job working out before school!
I want to know about the reading light on the child's finger! Where can I get some?
Thanks for sharing. How is your "guided lesson" in the beginning day different from your interactive read aloud? What is covered at each time?
Great question! They are very similar, but during my reader’s workshop lesson I am following the scope and sequence from our grade level and it shows a LOT of me modeling the skill. During IRA, I choose a skill that maybe my students need some review on and it involves a lot more discussion about the skill!
I am curious about what curriculum you use for math and reading or if you have a set curriculum?
For reading we loosely follow Lucy Calkin’s readers workshop lessons and for math we are on our own, so I created my own curriculum for math workshop:
