Welcome to Susan Jones Teaching. When it comes to the primary grades, learning *All Things* in the K-2 world has been my passion for many years! I just finished my M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction and love sharing all the latest and greatest strategies I learn with you through this blog and my YouTube channel! I hope you'll enjoy learning along with me :)
Thanks for sharing your book ideas. I always start off with Duck on a Bike also. One of my favorites to teach this is Two Bad Ants. You can make an inference on almost EVERY page! Loving the freebies too!

For the Love of First Grade
Last year, I used a few favorite read-alouds for making inferences, but my absolute favorite way to teach this skill is to use actual photos! Sometimes the photos are silly, sometimes serious, and sometimes they include animals rather than people, but my first graders became Inferencing Experts through use of our "photo of the day!" We also used photos for drawing conclusions, sequencing, and even nouns/verbs/adjectives study. Of course, we would take our new skill to text (usually our basal), but the photo idea was just life-changing:) Thanks so much for the awesome freebies, and I would love if you stopped by my blog where I have a giveaway for 2 children's books and $25 to Amazon or TpT!

Thanks! Will be using next week. My kids LOVE the Pigeon books. I do some inferring with Amber's ideas too – I show photos to the class and ask what they notice. They love this activity!
Where can I get the poster/anchor chart? Love the literature you chose!
Just beginning inferring – Thank you so much for the ideas and the freebies!
Teaching inferring to 5 and 6 year olds can be tricky, but these are great ideas and resources…thank you!
Thank you for your ideas! I think our first graders are really going to enjoy practicing this skill with books that they already enjoy!
Love them!
Thank you so much for sharing this brilliant lesson. I landed on your page by accident, and what a fab accident it turned out to be! Loving your ideas and going to use them (including saying it in the ‘teachery way’!)
I truly appreciate finding this great jewel of information and resources. I always love to gather new books and ideas from someone that has experience with the wondrous little minds of early childhood. Thank you so much for making this freebie available!!!
Love these resources!! Thank you! My class this year has a lot of challenges, both academically and emotionally. They struggle with comprehension, so I assumed that the higher level thinking skills would have to come much later in the year. One day several weeks ago, when we had about 15 extra minutes before an assembly, I pulled out a Mo Willems Pigeon book! I knew they would love it but what I realized while reading is that they were INFERRING!!! A skill that I thought would be way too hard for them! But they were doing it without my prompting – laughing when it was funny, telling me what was happening and why Pigeon reacted a certain way. And, of course, none of these actual events were written on the pages! Oh, how I underestimated my firsties! (Shame on me!) I plan to use the other books you recommended- really looking forward to it! Thanks again!
I love finding pictures and story books for inferencing. Thank you for your ideas.
Great Ideas! I teach ESL and these books are so visual.
