Combining Sentences with conjunctions and series of commas | Writing Center
$3.00
This sentence writing center gives students the opportunity to practice combining sentences using conjunctions and a series of commas. This type of activity is great practice for students in first and second grade.
How do these writing activities help students?
Primary students need explicit instruction on how to write sentences and use conjunctions correctly. This type of activity is scaffolded so students are given two sentences to begin with, as well as the conjunction to use when re-writing the sentence. This way students can practice different ways to combine the sentences correctly in a way that makes sense and is grammatically correct. As students work through these activities, they will become more confident in writing these
How do you use these in the classroom?
As with any writing activity, I begin by modeling how to complete these correctly after students learn about each conjunction and when/why we use it in our writing.
I like to have students practice combining these sentences with conjunctions orally before we practice writing them down! This can be done as a writing warm-up or as a whole-group lesson. Once students are familiar and comfortable doing this orally and have watched you model how to write these, then you can add them to a writing center for students to practice independently.
What is included in this unit?
