How do these blending cards help students?

Sentence scrambles are an effective activity for students to help reinforce syntax. By making these sentences decodable and following a systematic scope and sequence, you can differentiate so students are able to do this successfully. Students will cut out the words at the bottom of the page and use their syntax knowledge to put the words in the correct order. After pasting them in the correct order, students will re-write the sentence in their neatest handwriting and highlight the words that have the targeted phonics skill.

How do you use these in the classroom?

When introducing these to your students, you will want to model how to put the words in the correct order. Through think alouds and asking for student input, you can point out the capitalization at the beginning of sentences, the punctuation at the end, and how we know which words belong where in each sentence.

Once students understand how to complete this sentence, you can give students differentiated sheets to complete on their own during the phonics block or independent literacy centers.
