Number Talks: Number Strings for 1st and 2nd Grade
$2.00
Number talks in kindergarten, first, and second grade classrooms are so important to helping students think flexibly about numbers and gain conceptual understandings of all skills!
These number strings are a set of related problems with “base problems” (or helper problems) included to help students learn and conceptualize a new strategy. The strings are 10 slides each for one skill and are meant to be taught in one (or two if needed) sitting. We want students to discuss the relationship between the set of problems and see how some problems help us solve others.
This set includes 80 slides to help students with the following skills:
- anchoring the number 5
- anchoring the number 10
- doubles plus 1
- making ten addition strategy
- adding multiples of 10 to any number
- decomposing 2-digit numbers to make multiples of 10
- decomposing 2-digit numbers into tens and ones to add
- decomposing 2-digit numbers into tens and ones to subtract
Within each skill, there are 10 different slides meant to work together and they include an editable slide so you can add your own problems.
How do you use these?
Math talks should be implemented in your K-2 classroom every single day for about 5 minutes per day! You can simply display a few of the number talks and use the guided questions I provide to talk about math in a meaningful way with your students. These are also great to use in small groups on a particular skill that needs review!
Please download the preview to see examples of the different math talks included.
Enjoy!

PLEASE NOTE: these slides are already included in the SJT Math Club!
