How do you use these in your classroom?
These slides are used in a whole group setting to allow time to “talk about writing” in the same way we use a phonics warm-up and a math warm-up before we dive into skills. They are meant to be done in a short period of time (5 minutes) and we focus heavily on oral language to produce sentences before we write them down.
In my classroom, I would use take the time to review the skill at hand (see skills included below), then we would come up with sentences orally first to ensure we can produce complete sentences. After brainstorming sentences, I would choose 1 or 2 to write on the board and showcase proper spacing, capitalization, punctuation, and more.
You could also extend this activity (in 1st and 2nd grade), by having students bring a whiteboard and marker to the rug and at the end of the warm up, students will write their own sentence and share with a partner.
